19.11.2020

The Čakovec artist Pavao Vamplin (1924–2000) was active in the second half of the 20th century and engaged in a number of areas - from painting and graphics to the design of ceramics and graphic design. Although his work marked visual communications in Croatia from the 1950s to the 1970s, his contribution to graphic design was until recently unexplored and has not been presented to the public in the form of an exhibition.

Pavao Vamplin graduated from the Zagreb Academy of Applied Arts in 1955, and already during his studies he began working in graphic design. During his active work, he collaborated with numerous clients from the cultural and economic sector and realized posters for a number of events (eg Entertainment Melodies from Opatija from 1959). From 1959 to 1963 he was employed by Vjesnik and for the needs of this newspaper and printing company he realized numerous advertisements, vignettes, brochures and other propaganda materials in which he applied a wide range of approaches - from collages, photomontage and drawings to stylized depictions and games with inscriptions and typography. From 1963 to 1964 he worked at Jugoton and contributed to the creation of the visual identity of the company, but also the music industry of that time by designing the covers of gramophone records for various domestic and foreign performers.
